Logo Research
Film Logos differentiate between what their company is trying to get across to the audience about themselves and also give a small hint to what the film is like.
Warner Brothers:
Warner Brothers "shield" logo is one of the most famous logos to date. The shield presents Warner Brothers reliability, safety, strength and status. The colours of a golden yellow portraying an aspect of high quality and legend-like company. However by using the colours blue and white tones down the perfect, shining portrayal of the gold. Making it a more subtle yellow. Warner Brothers also use the initials "WB" to signify the importance of the company name. The use of initials is almost like it is a family name and not just a company. The sky behind the shield relates back to the strength and safety as it looks over you with a shield of protection. The sky also relates to use of the colour gold, portraying a high status and God like persona to the company. Also the blue inside the shield subtly matches the sky whilst continuing to make the shield and the writing stand out, yet the background is different shades of blue still making the blue inside the shield stand out to the audiences watching. Warner Brothers unlike other company's will change the backgrounds and the colours of the logos depending on what film you are watching. For example in Batman Begins the vast contrast between the two show that Warner Brothers create the logo to be a dark, sepia colour to match the dark colouring of the film poster. They also keep the shield this time taking all the colour out of the blue and creating a black which matches the background of the blue drained out of the sky. Also they keep the golden yellow but this time increasing the golden metal looking giving the logo a sophisticated, darker side. Which matches perfectly with the Batman film. Alongside the Batman films Warner Brothers will match all of their logos before a film perfectly with what is going to come next, in the first scene. In the Harry Potter films after the Warner Brothers logo is shown, the title is shown. Warner Brothers in all of the films (shown above) will match the colour writing of the shield and the backgrounds perfectly by keeping them exactly the same, slowing a smooth transition between the logo and title, keeping the audiences captivated and attentions right from the start. Another comment about the logos is that through the years of Harry Potter the logos match the age of the films, when Harry is ten the shield is bright yellow/gold keeping the signature blue but as the films go on the yellow is taken away and the brightness of the films become darker and darker. Some more than others like, the second and third, but this similarly to Batman highlights the more sinister tone of the films.
20th Century Fox
20th Century Fox is another well known famous film company that alongside Warner Brothers have an instant recognisable logo. Considering properly every person in the world knows the catchy music to go alongside the logo. 20th Century Fox also use, similarly to Warner Brothers, the gold colours. The gold in 20th Century Fox however is more stronger, bolder and God like, creating this high premium quality given to the company. With the gold huge title, the pillars, stairs and platforms again portray this royal, superior look to the logo which brings all the attention to the writing. Also not only do the platforms and pillars create this atmosphere of high quality but the use of the camera angle being low, makes the audience be in a position of looking up at the title. The spotlights also allow the audience to bring all their attention onto the writing also and is again recognisable in the darker logo, with the use of the spotlights/stage lights, being the second focus of the logo apart from the writing. 20th Century Fox is extremely famous for the music used however, alike Warner Brothers 20th Century Fox sometimes but very rarely uses characters from the scenes in the title sequence. (like Warner Brothers using the exact same background in Harry Potter and Batman's bats) 20th Century Fox uses "Ralph" from the Simpsons to sing along to the catchy trumpets, bringing audiences involvement as this would be something they would do, and also bringing the comedy straight in from the start of the film. 20th Century Fox's background uses a night sky in comparison to Warner Brothers bright blue which is slightly childlike but Fox's dark but interesting colour choice is more sophisticated and mysterious. In some cases Fox will subtly change the background to a starry, purple, galaxy type of night sky, giving a sense of adventure, mystery and a contrast to the gold. Hinting to the audience what is to come in the next part of the film.
Twisted Pictures:
Twisted Pictures is an independent film company that only make horrors in comparison to most logos Twisted Pictures use the dark background with it's full intention of sinister, eerie atmosphere. By using the white font it stands out but slightly dimming the bottom makes the logo not look as "safe" as it seems. The only colours used are blue and red. The red barbed wire around the blueish object in the middle. Brings all the attention to the middle of the picture. Alongside the use of barbed wire, the use of the white lines all over the words, match the curvy lines. The whole logo gives an unsettling feeling to any start of the film. The black being easy to blend with into the next scene. The second logo which Twisted Pictures uses the barbed wire again but in a more sinister way wrapping the barbed wire around the only pure colour of the logo. The barbed wire also dripping with blood and coming off the page makes the picture itself more scary and interesting, as we don't know what's on either side or what the object in the middle signify's. The use of the unknown, as the object makes the whole logo very chilling matching the genre of Horror films extremely well.
